ABOUT EUFASA AISBL

The European Union Foreign Affairs Spouses’ Partners and Families Association was constituted as an International Non-profit Association (Association Internationale San But Lucratif or AISBL) under Belgian law in accordance with the Belgian code of Companies and Associations of 23 March 2019. The purpose of EUFASA is to be the conduit of the exchange of information and ideas among its members, thus improving the provisions relating to spouses, partners and families of officers employed by the EU Ministries of Foreign Affairs (MFAs).

EUFASA aims to identify effective family support practices, and to raise awareness both at national and EU levels and gain support for family-friendly policies within the EU MFAs.

MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES

EUFASA has three categories of membership; namely, Affiliated, Observer and Honorary. The category of Affiliated Member is open to the MFA spouse/partner Association, which is dedicated to promoting the interest of Foreign Service spouses, partners and families.
The Observer member category is open to the MFA spouse/partner Association of EU or EFTA member states which express an interest in joining EUFASA as Affiliated Member for a period of two years or during the accession process.
The Honorary Member category is open to individuals who have made exceptional services for the advancement of EUFSA and its objectives.
Only one membership category is permitted for individual MFA member states

 

AFFILIATED MEMBERS

The current members of EUFASA are the spouses/partners’ Associations of: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, EEAS/EU, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

OBSERVER MEMBERS

The spouses/partners’ Associations of Iceland, Switzerland and United Kingdom are observer members, having the same rights as Affiliated Members. The EU Member States, without spouses/partners’ associations as well as the EU Accession and Candidate States, have observer status.

EUFASA’S CONCERNS

Topics of interest to EUFASA include:

  • spouse/partner employment
  • pension provisions
  • education, especially children with special needs
  • separation and divorce
  • foreign born spouses
  • security/safety
  • voluntary work
  • health/insurance
  • legal status

These themes recur in different forms, along with topics pertaining to the structure and mechanisms of EUFASA, in the working groups and the annual conference presentations. Some topics merit EUFASA-wide surveys where information is often elicited from the associations and their Ministries.

HOW EUFASA WORKS

EUFASA’s delegates meet at an annual conference.  Additionally, during the year, working groups, which were set up at the annual conference, will collaborate on projects or research for the benefit of member associations.

The Association which hosts the annual conference is President of Directors of EUFASA from the 1st of July until the 30th of June of the following year. The current President is assisted by the predecessor, the Board of Directors, the next President (the Troika) and by other delegates.

At the end of each conference, a letter is drafted, summarising the conference; outlining any recommendations arising from the conference; and, each Association is mandated to present the letter to its own Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

 

 

HISTORY

A diplomat’s wife initiated the idea of a meeting amongst the different European Community MFAs’ Spouses Associations. In 1985, the Italian Spouses Association (ACDMAE) organized a symposium in Rome, during the Italian Presidency of the EEC. Since then, a conference has been held every year in a different European capital.
